Pasado’s Safe Haven is proud to host Dr. Melinda Merck for the second time!

We are offering an 8 hour class on forensic necropsy and report writing. The class will involve both a lecture and a hands-on necropsy wet lab. This 8 hour class will be offered on two different days:

Saturday, May 27th, 2017
OR
Sunday, May 28th, 2017

LECTURE:

The forensic report is not the medical record. It is a legal document in which the veterinarian provides all information from the examination including assessment of injuries and suffering. Discussion of format, analysis and conclusions will be presented.

This lecture will discuss in great detail the development of the Forensic Report for cruelty cases including legal issues and common mistakes made by the veterinarian. Attendees will learn how to prepare for court and any type of testimony including depositions and trials.

NECROPSY WETLAB:

Discussion on how to perform a forensic necropsy including tips and techniques for processing a legal case. Documentation and working with a pathologist will be discussed.

This lab will teach attendees how to conduct a forensic necropsy on suspected cruelty cases. There are certain protocols to be followed and decisions to be made on how to approach the necropsy based on the unique aspects of each case. Identification and collection of physical, biological, and trace evidence will be covered. There are certain weapon characteristics than can be determined by careful examination of the injuries. Attendees will learn how to classify injuries, identify characteristics, and determine what type of weapon was used.
